The Importance Of Goal Setting
By Sam Witter on 19th April, 2016
Why do you get up and go to the gym at 6am in the morning? Why do you go for a 5 mile run in the rain?
Setting goals is so important to help you to stay motivated.
I have always enjoyed pushing myself and feeling a sense of accomplishment. This started from a young age when I competed in track events and I had my sights set on running a personal best or winning my next race.
Now I enjoy not only setting and beating my own personal goals, but helping my clients to achieve theirs.
It doesn’t matter how ambitious or simple your goal is, whether it is to lose 5 stone in body fat, run a marathon or simply feel fitter and healthier. Goal setting is important so you know why you are training and what you are aiming for, this will help to focus your mind and make those early morning gym sessions easier.
There is a saying that I always tell my clients:
‘where your mind goes, your body will follow.’
When it comes to setting your goals, never think that your ‘ideal’ is unachievable. There is one rule when it comes to goal setting and that is to never say ‘I can’t’!
You may have an ultimate goal to lose 5 stone in body fat, so break this down into a series of manageable and realistic goals in order to meet your ultimate objective.
Here is my quick guide to setting goals.
Follow the SMART principle, make your goal :
- Time frame
If your goal has all of these elements you can’t go wrong.
A recent goal of mine was to cycle around Lake Como in Italy and particularly up a very steep mountain climb called the Madonna Del Ghisallo. It is something I have always wanted to do and I loved every minute of it.
It’s easy to make excuses to not do all the things you dream of but you only live once and need to do as many great things as you can.
My website TriPlan.co.uk will help you to set your own personal goals, keep you motivated and focused with exercise and nutrition guidance as well as healthy recipes and lifestyle tips.
All the best
