Cortisol, the stress hormone, trains your body to store fat around your stomach. Cortisol is released in times of stress, known as the fight or flight response. With increasing pressures of day-to-day life many people find themselves stressed and the body will react to this by secreting excess amounts of cortisol. It is now widely accepted that those who store excess fat in this area are more vulnerable to heart disease. High cortisol also increases cholesterol and triglyceride (blood fat).
Fat builds up in this area when cortisol levels in your body are high, due to stress or anxiety. We don’t want to eliminate cortisol all together as we need cortisol for the flight or fight response.
